DIY Vaulted Ceilings
Several years back we decided to vault the ceilings in our living room. We have rather low ceilings in the house and the living room is really large so the ceiling height was really obvious.
This is the before picture- its very poor quality and I apologize for that but it is all that I have.
This was the fire place on the other wall that you cant see in the first picture
(it was not a usable fireplace)
you can really see how low the ceiling is
We tried to tape off areas and do sections at a time to keep the mess under control
The mess took over
It took us 58 large construction garbage bags to get all of the insulation out. We found hot exposed wires that we had to fix. We had to move gas lines. It took us many months to complete this project!
It sure felt good when we got to the drywall
This was probably the largest project we did on our house but it was well worth it.
The after
This is where the fireplace use to be
We also added a skylight. The space now feels bright and open.
(I don't think this is a DIY project for most people. It was a HUGE job and we are in a position to do these things on our own or with help of friends in the business- but unless you have a true understanding of it all I would not attempt this)
